Members in Action

SER's Members in Action program spotlights the work of our members – individuals, groups, student associations, and chapters – and helps to communicate ecological restoration initiatives and projects to other members and new audiences.

In this spotlight, we feature Bryan Kyalo – Bryan has been a member of SER since 2021 and is the Student Representative to the SER Africa Board of Directors. He is currently the Chairman of Asili Generation Kenya, a nonprofit that is working hard to clean up Eastleigh, Nairobi.

How long have you been a member of SER, and what is your best experience with SER far?

I have been a member of SER since 2021, two amazing years being part of a community of dedicated and hardworking people. I treasure the knowledge that I’ve learned from my membership with SER. Getting to participate in conferences and getting updates on what is happening all over the world, including ways to control and conserve our world, is always special.

Why did you join SER?

I joined SER to gain knowledge and also learn from other environmentalists. I believe in togetherness, and SER exemplifies that. A unity that cannot be shaken. Joining SER has been a great decision, the knowledge, and networks I have gained have been incredible.

“Knowing that my work will be saving a river, restoring a forest, or making the community more aware of environmental concerns is truly an honor. I feel blessed every day of my life knowing that I choose to do what my heart has always wanted – to be part of the change for this planet of ours.”

What is your current occupation?

I am currently the Chairman of Asili Generation Kenya. I run Asili and ensure that we meet our mandate of environmental conservation, protection, and awareness.

Please tell us about your career trajectory in the field of ecological restoration.

As the Chairman of Asili Generation Kenya, I take pride in all that we have done. It started with me sharing my vision with friends on how we need to take a stand in what is happening to our world, and from there we got to work. I am extremely grateful for my team. Our dedication and zeal has given us a lot of wins in our community: three successful clean up campaigns, over 300 tree seedlings planted, recognition from our community, and collaborating with the government. I see Asili Generation Kenya being an organization that will inspire the younger generation to become aware and be part of the change needed to save our planet.

What do you find most rewarding about working for our organization?

Knowing that my work will be saving a river, restoring a forest, or making the community more aware of environmental concerns is truly an honor. I feel blessed every day of my life knowing that I choose to do what my heart has always wanted – to be part of the change for this planet of ours. I hope to inspire a future generation to learn that it’s not about age, but about not letting your fear lead you. Break through that glass ceiling and let hope in. We can save this planet, and we will.

What projects are you working on right now?

Currently, I am working on starting a student chapter of SER Africa. I am a representative for the SER Africa Board of Directors, and it is my mandate to ensure we get as many students involved as possible. The other project we are undertaking in my community is building a tree nursery center for our community. We want to start having a center where we grow our trees for the community. This will help in our tree planting exercises and various clean-ups that we plan on having, as well as establishing a stable income for Asili Generation Kenya. Our biggest and most ambitious project is the establishment of Asili Park in our community. We have a large place that is used by our community and an ambitious plan to transform a sector to be an Asili Park with lots of trees, clean-ups and landscaping. We want to use the park as a reflection of what we hope our community will look like in the future.

How does your work support the UN decade on Ecosystem Restoration?

As Asili Generation Kenya, we are putting all of our effort into halting and reversing the destruction of ecosystems. Through our various activities, we want to restore destroyed ecosystems back to their natural state.

What does ecological restoration mean to you?

Bringing back biodiversity and ecosystems to normal. Back to their intended purpose. It means us finding the true way of balancing our relationship with the planet. It is our duty and mandate to achieve this balance for the future generations to come.

The young generation taking care of the earth and its ecosystems

Why would you encourage others, particularly young people, to get involved in this field?

I would say it should come from the heart. The young generation should fall in love with taking care of the earth and its ecosystems. When there is love there is care, we need to show the beauty and importance of that. It will encourage many young people, and I do believe the movement has started. All over the world, the younger generation is standing up to save our world.

What is one thing, either industry-related or not, you learned in the last month?

I took part in an educational tour of an awesome organization that is reclaiming a river, and got to learn a lot about bamboo trees and their benefits. I also got to see a river cleaning machine at work, which was super exciting.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

Well I try not to show it but am a good singer. I sing a lot and dance a lot when I feel that the stress of work is overwhelming. It helps to keep me calm and grounded.
