Global Policy

Policy at the international, national and regional scale has tremendous impact on when, where, and how restoration is implemented. We engage with global partners to promote cutting-edge restoration policy and to create and promote consensus within the restoration arena. We work to mainstream ecological restoration into environmental and climate policy decision-making around the world and act as a leading resource for technical guidance and capacity building.

Society for Ecological Restoration Standards, Guidelines, and Principles
In collaboration with global partners, SER produces standards and guidance for implementing restoration. Standards-based restoration can help increase the effectiveness of restoration projects and programs, delivering greater ecological and human wellbeing outcomes.

Advancing International Policy
SER identifies and addresses knowledge and policy gaps that may hinder ecological restoration effectiveness, uptake, and upscaling. SER fills these knowledge gaps with reports, guides, and other tools; through hosting high level plenary discussions to address high impact policy, economic, and other issues related to ecological restoration; and participating as an observer in numerous UN conventions.

UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
SER was one of the earliest global partners to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and our activities support the goals of the Decade to generate a global restoration movement, increase political will for restorative actions, and increase technical capacity for high-quality implementation.

Restoration Project Certification
SER is actively working with a network of partners to pilot a Mediterranean Forest Restoration Certification project. The goal of this pilot project is to develop a framework that facilitates the design, implementation, and funding of high-quality ecological restoration in Mediterranean forests in order to achieve the greatest possible ecological and social outcomes.
