Washington, DC (August 22, 2017) — In light of global efforts to promote ecological restoration, Island Press has partnered with the Society of Ecological Restoration (SER) to provide two fully-translated editions of Ecological Restoration, Second Edition: Principles, Values, and Structure of an Emerging Profession by Andre F. Clewell and James Aronson.
Now available as an e-book in both Spanish and Portuguese, Restauración Ecológica and Restauração Ecológica draw upon cultural resources and local skills and knowledge to reveal the fundamental concepts of restoration. Translated using the Google Cloud Translation API and edited by native speakers, these new e-books reflect Island Press’ innovative use of technology and pave the way for exciting new opportunities as Island Press works to spread more books and ideas to larger audiences across the globe.
“We knew there was a need for local-language information on restoration science in South America, but we hadn’t been able to find an efficient way to translate and deliver books,” said David Miller, president and publisher of Island Press. “After learning about Google’s recent advances in translation technology, we decided to experiment with a more affordable and efficient process in digital form. The authors were important partners in this experiment, working with local scientists to improve on and polish Google’s initial translations. The entire process took just four months, and we are thrilled to be able to bring this critical environmental science to places where it can be more effectively applied to today’s environmental challenges.”
In the book, Clewell and Aronson take readers through eight “virtual field trips” as they explore the diverse values of ecosystem restoration, the structure and context for restoration work, and the professional development and relationships that restoration fosters. Island Press, in response to a world-wide need for ecological restoration and environmental protection, will continue to develop innovate ways to share these crucial ideas to audiences around the world.
Andre F. Clewell taught botany at Florida State University in Tallahassee for 16 years before entering private practice as a restoration practitioner and plant ecologist. He served as president of the Society for Ecological Restoration and is co-coordinator of the RNC Alliance.
James Aronson is head of the Restoration Ecology group at the Center of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (CNRS), in Montpellier, France, and curator of restoration ecology at the Missouri Botanical Garden. He is co-coordinator of the RNC Alliance.
