Restoration in Action: SER and Microsoft utilizing standards-based ecological restoration to integrate ecology, culture, and community - Part 2

Description: Join us for a webinar featuring three standards-based ecological restoration projects being implemented through a collaboration between SER, Microsoft, and local partners. These initiatives not only aim to revitalize diverse landscapes and promote sustainable ecosystems but also offer cultural and social benefits to local communities. This is the first of two webinars that will each highlight three different SER partners from across the world who will share more details about their restoration projects.

Projects presented include:

  1. JK Black Oak Ecological Restoration and Biodiversity Enhancement - Virginia, USA. Learn about the restoration efforts at JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary in Northern Virginia. This 89-acre sanctuary, rich with oak-hickory forests, meadows, and vernal pools, faces challenges from invasive plants and deer over-browsing. Join us to discover how the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is addressing these issues through targeted forest and meadow restoration projects to rejuvenate native habitats.
  2. Forest of the Future - Hortolândia, Brazil. Discover the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the 10 Flagships of the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration elected by the United Nations (UN), and its importance and relevance for forest restoration. This presentation will also feature an overview of the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, which has been working for 24 years on the restoration agenda of this biome, one of the most threatened globally.
  3. Restoration of an old coppice forest in Denmark - Copenhagen, Denmark. Close to Copenhagen, Denmark, there is an old, protected forest with high natural values. The project expands a coppice forest from 4 to 10 hectares and improves natural qualities by, for example, sowing and planting native species under the stands. The project is carried out in collaboration between the Danish Nature Agency, a local conservation association, volunteers from Microsoft, and the National Park of Skjoldungernes Land.

Presenters:

Jonathan Clarke, Community Environmental Sustainability Program Lead at Microsoft
Gerco Hoogeweg, Manager at JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary
Rafael Bitante, Fernandes Forest Restoration Manager at SOS Mata Atlântica
Anders Bülow, Director at Nationalpark Skjoldungernes Land
