Location: Online, Zoom

Description: Described in early literature as one of the most biologically diverse native ecosystems in Hawaiʻi, Auwahi was greatly modified over the last century. Invasive species and fire stripped lower and middle vegetation layers and eliminated nearly all native fauna. By the 1990s, Auwahi was referred to as a tragic “museum forest”, diverse, ancient native trees isolated and scattered in fields of invasive African grasses, without successful regeneration for more than a century.

At the time, fellow biologists discouraged attempting restoration at Auwahi because the forest was too degraded, suggesting photo documentation of rare native trees, some restricted to Auwahi forest, would be more worthwhile. Rather than accepting ecological loss as irreversible, in 1997, biologists, local volunteers, and landowner ‘Ulupalakua Ranch partnered to attempt restoration of native forest at Auwahi.

Re-establishing native species cover and ecological thresholds crossed over the past nearly 30 years have exceeded the most optimistic initial expectations. As one metric, after the first 15 years in restoration areas, cover of native plant species increased from 10% to 98%, while non-native cover declined from 87% to 2%.

From onset, the Auwahi project (www.auwahi.org) has emphasized re-establishing the local community as konohiki, knowledgeable, authentic stewards of place. From 2000 to present, there have been continuous, monthly volunteer trips, averaging 20-40 volunteer participants, nearly all from local communities, including many students. The project promotes ‘aloha ‘āina, appreciation and willingness to defend cherished symbols of the Hawaiian culture including leeward tree species important in Hawaiian ethnobotany and cosmology.

Participants will develop an enhanced understanding of Hawaiʻi’s native ecosystems, the ecological pressures they face, and the broader biogeographic and conservation context in which these systems persist..

Register here

SER Webinar Series | Building restoration capacity through seed: Lessons from a Global Study

Location: Online, Zoom

Description: Seed-based restoration is fundamental to most terrestrial restoration efforts, yet the seed systems needed to support large-scale, durable outcomes are often underdeveloped. As restoration targets grow worldwide, practitioners and seed producers face a shared challenge: how to build reliable, regionally adapted seed supply that can meet increasing demand.

In Building Restoration Capacity Through Seed: Lessons from a Nuffield Scholar’s Global Study, Renny W. Grilz, PAg and a Nuffield Scholar, shares insights from a multi-year global study of native seed systems, informed by direct engagement with seed producers, seed banks, and restoration practitioners across Europe and North America. The webinar examines how effective seed systems connect wild collection, production, storage, applied science, and procurement into functional supply chains that enable restoration at scale.

Global lessons are then grounded in practical application through examples from Western Canada’s prairie ecosystems. Drawing on the speaker’s experience applying seed-based restoration through the Meewasin Valley Authority in Saskatchewan, Canada, the presentation illustrates how seed availability, species selection, and producer coordination shape real restoration outcomes.

The webinar concludes with perspectives from the speaker’s farm-based native seed business, demonstrating how global seed system models influence on-farm decisions around species development, production scaling, collaboration, and risk. Together, these applied examples offer practical guidance for practitioners and seed producers working to strengthen restoration capacity in their own regions

Register here

Speaker:

Renny W. Grilz, P.Ag and Nuffield Scholar

Renny W. Grilz, PAg is a restoration practitioner, native seed producer, and Nuffield Scholar based in Saskatchewan, Canada. He serves as Director, Conservation with the Meewasin Valley Authority, where he leads seed-based prairie restoration, invasive species management, prescribed fire, and targeted grazing programs in urban and peri-urban landscapes. Renny is also co-owner of Blazing Star Wildflower Seed Company, a family-run native seed business with over 30 years of experience producing and wild-harvesting prairie grasses and wildflowers for restoration, conservation, and agriculture. Through this work, he applies seed system principles directly at the farm scale, bridging global research with practical production and restoration outcomes. As a Nuffield Scholar, Renny has conducted a multi-year global study of native seed systems, engaging with seed producers, seed banks, restoration practitioners, and policy leaders across Europe and North America. His work focuses on building producer networks, strengthening seed supply chains, and scaling restoration through reliable, regionally adapted seed. Renny is a Professional Agrologist and a recognized leader in prairie conservation, native seed systems, and applied restoration practice.

Description: The International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) is the premier global gathering for shellfish restoration science and practice, convening biennially since 1996. ICSR brings together marine scientists, restoration practitioners, resource managers, policy makers, Indigenous knowledge holders, and community partners from 20+ countries to share the latest research and practice in shellfish reef restoration.

ICSR 2026 is hosted by the Puget Sound Restoration Fund in partnership with the Squaxin Island Tribe on the ancestral lands of the Squaxin Island people in Washington State. It is organized by the International Shellfish Restoration Society (ISRS), a confirmed 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 39-2829151).

The conference includes 14 oral sessions (Oct 5–7), a poster session, and field trips (Oct 8) to a Tribal museum, historic oyster farm, and conservation hatchery. Expected attendance: 200–300 professionals.

Shellfish restoration is a core discipline within ecological restoration. Oyster reefs, mussel beds, clam gardens, and other shellfish habitats are among the most degraded marine ecosystems globally. Their restoration provides critical ecosystem services including water filtration, shoreline stabilization, carbon sequestration, biodiversity support, and climate resilience. ICSR sessions directly address restoration science, techniques, monitoring, and adaptive management — all central to the CERP body of knowledge.

Using Fluvial Geomorphology to Improve Stream Restoration and Watershed Management

Location: Online, Zoom

Instructor: Dr. John Field, Field Geology Services

Description:

Stream restoration has become a catch-all phrase nationwide to describe all sorts of river management activities including flood and erosion control, habitat enhancement and endangered species recovery, and sediment and nutrient reduction efforts. An understanding of fluvial geomorphology can be helpful in establishing the underlying causes for stream degradation and bank erosion, anticipating how the stream will change over time if no restoration occurs, developing appropriate restoration strategies for the given setting, and foreseeing how streams will respond to a proposed restoration project. In this way, the actual needs for restoration can be documented, restoration projects tailored for a given site, and better restoration outcomes achieved. This course will utilize examples from around the country (and in fact the world) with particular focus on New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, but will be of value to all, regardless of location, as the basic principles of fluvial geomorphology and stream restoration to be covered in the course are applicable everywhere.

This three-day short course (from 10am-5pm Eastern Time each day) will explore the principles of fluvial geomorphology and stream restoration in a virtual format. An optional virtual field trip of stream restoration sites in the Chesapeake Bay region and possibly other locations is also available and will include live interaction with the field trip leader. The course is designed for government officials, environmental and engineering consultants, non-profit watershed groups, construction contractors, educators and students, and others trying to sustainably address flooding, erosion, habitat, and sediment and nutrient loading issues along rivers and streams.

While some quantitative methods will be introduced, the course will focus on the underlying concepts of fluvial geomorphology that are needed to effectively apply and interpret the results of quantitative analyses used in stream restoration designs. Fluvial geomorphology is also critical for anticipating how streams respond, both positively and negatively, to human activities along rivers and streams, including stream restoration projects. The short course will highlight process-based restoration practices, which are typically more effective, sustainable, and cost effective than form-based practices. Whether designing stream restoration projects yourself or reviewing plans to determine their potential effectiveness, this short course will provide you with the background and practical experience to identify the best restoration approaches for a particular setting and set of project objectives.

The short course will consist of visual presentations, small group exercises, and activities that will provide participants with practical experiences and examples to recognize unstable channel reaches in a watershed and identify the most appropriate stream restoration techniques that will best address the identified instabilities, if present. The first day of the short course will focus on the basic concepts of fluvial geomorphology including extended discussions on stream equilibrium and channel classification. The second day will consist of hands-on activities in small breakout groups to reinforce the geomorphic concepts learned during day 1 and will provide practical experiences using resources (e.g., topo maps, aerial photographs) critical for completing geomorphic assessments at the watershed scale. The final day will apply the knowledge gained to examine numerous stream restoration practices through a series of case studies (working in small groups) that will highlight the many issues that must be considered to successfully and sustainably restore rivers and streams and to anticipate potential problems even before a restoration design is complete. The optional virtual field trip will tour examples of restoration sites that will reinforce the concepts and lessons of the first three days.
