From Maine to Hawaii and points in between, Sea Grant is helping advance the science behind dune restoration and ensuring it gets into the hands of the communities that are looking to shore up their coastal resilience by enhancing beach dune habitats. Among other accomplishments, the national network of university-based programs has proliferated dune restoration handbooks in New Jersey, Florida, Hawaii, and North Carolina; funded vegetation research in Florida and North Carolina; and aided in direct restoration of acreage in New Hampshire and Maine. This presentation will highlight three recent efforts by Sea Grant extension professionals and Sea Grant-funded researchers, providing informative case studies and useful tools for others involved in dune restoration.
