Description:

This program is conducted as a workshop in which students take part in Blue Corner Marine Research's ongoing coral restoration project. During the 6-day program students will learn about the science of restoration ecology and how it applies to marine environments. Students will also learn several techniques in coral propagation, monitoring nursery corals and transplanting corals onto modular reef structures.

This coral reef restoration workshop is a 6-day training program which takes place on Nusa Lembongan island, Bali, Indonesia. The courses consists of classroom training sessions and working underwater on the Nusa Islands Coral Restoration Project. Components include:

(1) Coral Reef Ecology and Restoration Ecology;

(2) Active Measures in Coral Reef Restoration;

(3) Coral Transplantation Techniques;

(4) Building and Maintaining Coral Nurseries;

(5) Developing a monitoring plan for coral restoration projects.

 

Instructor Bio: 

Andrew Taylor, Director of Blue Corner Marine Research (www.bluecornerconservation.org)

Andrew runs a marine conservation organization in Nusa Penida Marine Park, Bali, Indonesia which focuses on coral restoration and scientific diving training programs. He has been based in the area for 9 years and co-owns a dive training centre. Prior to working in Nusa islands, Andrew worked for a biological consulting company conducting marine habitat restoration and compensation projects for industry and development projects. He has a post graduate degree in coral reef ecology and is a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner with the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER). Since 2004 Andrew has been involved in several coral reef restoration projects in Asia. For the last 2 years Blue Corner Marine Research has been conducting coral restoration at a site on the northern reef on Nusa Penida island. The program uses students and volunteers to implement and monitor the restoration site.
