The Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology is an interdisciplinary meeting held approximately every 3-5 years with the specific aim to further the scientific study of stream ecosystems in urban landscapes ( The 5th Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology (SUSE5) will be held February 12 to 15, 2020 in Austin, TX.

Managing urban streams requires a holistic approach that is highly adaptable, empirically based, and cuts across physical and social-science disciplines to address a complicated set of co-occurring and interacting ecological and social factors that drive ecosystem impairment. The complexity of urban stream management is a ‘wicked problem’, and the 5th Symposium (Moving the bar on multidisciplinary solutions to wicked urban stream problems) will address contemporary issues in urban stream management though a unique format where attendees work in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams to address complex real-world urban stream management issues in Austin. This case-study approach will result in a) a narrative that demonstrates the potential benefits and drawbacks of designing management solutions to wicked problems through interdisciplinary teams and b) actionable approaches for addressing barriers for managing urban streams in Austin. Like previous symposia, SUSE5 will be an intimate meeting with an international group of about 120 attendees from diverse backgrounds including ecology, engineering, management, social science, and other fields across natural and social science disciplines.

More information about the meeting can be found on our website ( Early-bird registration and the deadline for submitting a poster presentation is Dec 15, which can be found on the SUSE5 registration page ( Please feel free to email Robert Smith ( or Megan Fork ( if you have any questions about registration, the program, or just want to know more about SUSE.
