GRASSLAND AND SAVANNA RESTORATION

The theme of the 13th annual Texas SER Conference, co-hosted by the Native Prairies Association of Texas and the Texas Riparian Association is Grassland and Savanna Restoration.  Presentation topics, however, are open to all areas of ecological restoration and a special session is planned for presentations on riparian topics.  Optional field trips are scheduled for Friday, August 8th to the The Nature Conservancy Davis Mountains Preserve.  The Plenary Address and oral presentations will be held Saturday, August 9th at Sproul Ranch and until noon on Sunday, August 10th at Indian Lodge.  Conference registration and check in begins Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at Indian Lodge in Davis Mountains State Park.

Due to the remote and beautiful location of this year’s conference, the full registration will include a Friday night social, Saturday lunch and Saturday night social.  The Friday night social will be held at the meeting room in Indian Lodge in association with registration beginning at 6:00 pm.  Saturday lunch and Saturday night social will be held along with the oral presentations at Sproul Ranch.  The Saturday night social will feature a full dinner and live music.  Sunday presentations will be held at the meeting room in Indian Lodge. Extra tickets for guests may be purchased for either Friday or Saturday night social for $35.00.  The cost to attend only the Saturday oral presentations and lunch is $90.00.

On Friday, August 8, 2008 registered field trip participants will meet at the headquarters of The Nature Conservancy Davis Mountains Preserve for a guided tour of restoration and prescribed fire sites in the area (cost is $25.00 and includes a box lunch).

Self-guided hiking on the trails in the Davis Mountains Preserve on Friday, August 8, 2008 is also available on a donation basis to The Nature Conservancy - register at The Preserve's Headquarters - however, no box lunch will be provided.  Maps to The Preserve are available on request and 4 wheel drive vehicles are recommended.

Friday and Sunday activities are based out of Indian Lodge at Davis Mountains State Park while Saturday’s activities will occur at Sproul Ranch (www.sproulranch.com).  Hotel and bed and breakfast accommodations in the Fort Davis area can be found at:   http://www.fortdavis.com/accommodations.html.  Information about camping at Davis Mountains State Park can be found at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us

Dr. Bonnie J. Warnock, Assistant Professor of Natural Resource Management at Sul Ross State University is our plenary speaker.  Since joining the faculty in 2002, Dr. Warnock has been teaching classes in range science and conducting research in land restoration.  Dr. Warnock comes from a ranching family that has been raising cattle and sheep in Brewster and Pecos counties since the 1880’s.  Dr. Warnock has a B.S. and M.S. in range science from Sul Ross State University.  Her Ph.D. in soil science from Texas A&M University focused on restoring salinized soils using halophytes.  The title of Dr. Warnock’s plenary address is:  “Water in the desert:  Arid lands restoration and the hydrologic cycle”.
