Inland NW Aquatic, Riparian, and Wetland Symposium 22 February 2008, Spokane WA
Thank you to all who participated! Participants: please be sure to fill out a conference evaluation form (click here) and mail it to Rebecca Brown at EWU Department of Biology, SCI 258, Cheney, WA 99004.
The meeting, held on February 22, 2008 at Eastern Washington University Riverpoint Campus in Spokane, Washington, was designed to be a focused symposium highlighting Aquatic, Riparian, and Wetland Systems in the Inland Northwest. A major goal of the conference was to bring together researchers and land managers from across the Inland Northwest to communicate and network about stream, lake, river, and wetland restoration and management. The meeting featured keynote addresses by Drs. Jack Stanford of Flathead Lake Biological Station, and Tom Hruby of the Washington State Department of Ecology, as well as three organized symposia on riparian systems, aquatic systems, and wetlands and hydrology. The meeting was sponsored by
Eastern Washington University and Society for Ecological Restoration Northwest.
The symposium was an unqualified success! We had over 150 participants, including 34 speakers and 12 posters. The participants represented an interdisciplinary group from a wide range of local, state, and federal agencies, nonprofit groups, private companies, and educational institutions (Eastern Washington University, Central Washington University, Washington State University, Gonzaga University, Spokane Falls Community College, University of Idaho, University of Montana, University of Lethbridge, BC, Sierra Nevada College, NV, and regional high schools). Participants came from all over the Northwest and from as far away as New York, Nevada, and British Columbia.
The overwhelming response to our evaluations thus far has been to hold this meeting again on an annual or biannual basis. To that end, we would be interested in institutional partners who might like to host the meeting in alternate years, or perhaps on a rotating basis with several other institutions. If you belong to an Inland Northwest institution and would be interested in hosting or organizing this meeting next year or the year after, please contact Rebecca Brown at 509-359-2528.
