Climate Change Research Assistant

The Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Oregon currently has an opening for a full time Research Assistant to work on a manipulative climate change research project. The U.S. Department of Energy funded project will investigate how predicted climate change will affect the distribution, abundance, and fitness of native prairie plants in the Pacific Northwest in an experimental framework. The experiment will employ cutting edge technology to heat and remotely monitor physical characteristics at each site. The position is available 6/15/2009, with annual renewals dependent on satisfactory performance.

A Bachelor's degree and prior field work experience, including proficiency with electrical wiring, carpentry, etc. for setting up experimental infrastructure is required. A Master's degree, botanical knowledge of Pacific Northwest prairie species, and biogeochemistry training are preferred qualifications. The successful candidate must be able to work in a team atmosphere and be available for extensive travel to field sites from Southern Oregon to Central Washington. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field and laboratory research under the direction of Principal Investigators Scott Bridgham and Bart Johnson. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

AmeriCorps – Washington Conservation Corps, seeking individuals who are willing to accept challenges, participate as a team player, and have the desire to learn and grow.  Are you looking to experience what could be one of the most rewarding years of your life? The Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) is an opportunity for WCC Members to learn valuable job skills and receive training while gaining experience in the environmental field. The diversity of WCC Projects provides something for everybody!   The WCC is open to 18-25 year olds. Previous experience is not required and WCC Corpsmembers earn the Washington State minimum wage.  We currently employ 135 Corpsmembers and the positions are located statewide from the peaks of the Olympics to the fields of Eastern Washington will begin in October 2008 and end in September of 2009.   The WCC works on an assortment of natural resource activities which may include some of the following types of projects: construction, restoration & enhancement, emergency response and community service.  WCC members receive on the job training of all sorts, as well as formal training classes (e.g., Wilderness First Responder, Hazardous Materials Response, Wildland Firefighting, Ethnobotany, and PFC/GIS. Many of our training courses result in a certification.

After successful completion of your 1 year WCC service term, you will receive an education award of $4,725 (12 months/1700 hour service term) from AmeriCorps. The education award can be used to pay for tuition at an institute of higher education (trade schools included) or to pay back qualified student loans.  Your qualified student loans can be deferred while you are enrolled in the program.
