Environmental Specialist AND Restoration Ecologist (2 jobs)

Habitat Restoration Program Director
Office Location: Corvallis, Oregon: The Institute for Applied Ecology’s Habitat Restoration Program seeks a director with strong business and grant writing skills and a background in ecology, restoration or wildlife to lead and grow the program.
Duties of the Habitat Restoration Program Director include: Promotes, administers, and continues the development of the program mission and structure; Writes grants and acquires funding to support entire program; Manages projects, contracts, and budgets; Supervises and manages staff; Coordinates with partners, contractors, and other IAE programs; Presents information to funders, partners, and the public; Writes reports and manuscripts; Supports field operations and scientific endeavors
Specific responsibilities include: Supervise 3 or more full-time professional / technical staff; manage work plans and hiring needs. Acquire outside funding to support the program’s mission: restore native habitats for the benefit of wildlife and species recovery; provide high quality native plant materials for restoration; increase capacity, infrastructure, & markets for plant production and restoration; increase knowledge of best restoration practices. Work with IAE Executive Director and Board to meet program goals. Coordinate with a diversity of public and private landowners, conservation organizations, and seed producers to meet the goals of the restoration community. Assist with habitat restoration program operations including plant materials acquisition, production and out-planting, restoration planning, and regional conservation coordination. Disseminate information about our program findings and accomplishments through report writing, web and journal publications, and presentations at meetings and conferences. Out-of-town travel required as needed to complete work and attend meetings and conferences. Field work is a minor component of this position.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree (preferred) with 2 years experience or Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years experience; experience managing multiple / complex projects simultaneously; proven leadership skills; record of funded grants; strong fiscal management and organization skills; strong background in both oral and written communication; excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access; Experience with prairie ecosystems preferred, particularly Pacific Northwest habitats.
Compensation and start date: The pay rate for this position will be $3440 to $4300 per month, based on education, skills and experience. This is a full-time position and is eligible for IAE’s competitive benefits package, including health insurance. Preference will be given to applicants who can start May 3rd, 2010 or earlier.

Field Assistant - Wildfire and Sagebrush-steppe vegetation

Job Description: A field crew position is available as part of the multi-agency Fires@ALE project evaluating the effects of multiple wildfires on sagebrush-steppe in eastern Washington. The project is a collaboration between the University of Washington, The Nature Conservancy, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Fieldwork will take place in and around the Arid Lands Ecology Reserve(Hanford Reach National Monument, WA). Crews will be in the field for extended periods (up to 10 consecutive days); housing and food will be provided while in the field. The position is best suited to a mature, upper- level undergraduate or recent graduate who is considering advanced study or professional work in plant ecology or range management.
Qualifications: Previous experience in standard vegetation sampling techniques, familiarity with basic surveying tools; coursework or experience in range ecology, fire ecology, or a related field; Good physical condition, and able to work long hours in variable weather; Washington state drivers license and experience driving off-road; Neat and legible handwriting Able to work and live cooperatively with others; Familiarity with the flora of sagebrush-steppe systems is desirable.

Environmental Scientist I

Job Description: This position involves work to revise and conduct a recreation study on the Cedar River. Work includes study design, equipment calibration and monitoring, interviewing people recreating along the Cedar River, and analysis and presentation of study results. Work will take place mostly outdoors in spring and summer months and requires the ability to work in all weather conditions and on rough terrain. Work is part-time with Saturday and Sunday hours needed in order to collect relevant public recreation data. This temporary, part-time position works a 20-30-hour week and is eligible for overtime. The work schedule is 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Wednesday–Sunday. Weekend, holiday, and evening work, including attendance at evening meetings, will be required from time to time. Restoration Technician

Methow Natives is currently seeking qualified candidates for a restoration technician position for the 2010 field season. The position will be divided between restoration and nursery activities. Restoration duties include planting, irrigation, weed control and fence repair. Nursery work includes all aspects of native plant propagation such as seed collection and cleaning, transplanting and nursery maintenance. Successful candidates will need a bachelors in natural sciences or a background in restoration and native plant work. Applicants should have a strong work ethic, be creative, energetic and able to work independently. Valid drivers license necessary. Salary DOE. Housing available.
Methow Natives is a small, family run, restoration nursery located in the beautiful Methow Valley. We have been growing native plants and restoring the local watershed the past ten years. Methow Natives works with a variety of agencies including WDOT, USFS. WDFW, USFW. Yakama Tribe, and the Methow Salmon Recovery Foundation.
