2010 Chapter Awards Announced!

The SERNW 2010 President's Award has been awarded to Paul Stamets, mycologist.  Paul has pioneered the field of mushrooms as a tool for restoration, championing their importance to soil fertility and bioremediation. He has discovered and described four new species of mushrooms, and invented many techniques in the field of edible and medicinal mushroom cultivation.  He has written six books on mushrooms, and has authored many articles on the ecology of mushrooms and their environments. His work is highly significant to the field of conservation of the ancestral strains of mushrooms endemic to the Pacific Northwest.

The SERNW 2010 Special Award has been awarded to Jake Jacobson, Watershed Steward with Snohomish County Public Works.  This award is given by SERNW to a member who has contributed time, talent, and oustanding service in support of SERNW. Jake has truly given of himself to serve SERNW for many years.  He was first involved with the board in 2003 as treasurer, and then worked to plan the 2005 meeting in Seattle, and served as president for 4 years.  During that time, he organized the second Design to Dirt Workshop, and was instrumental in the 2006 and 2007 meetings. During his time on the board, SERNW reorganized around an all-volunteer organization, moved to sound financial footing, and established both the awards program and a scholarship program.

The SERNW 2010 Conservationist of the Year Award has been awarded to Ann Boyce, Executive Director of the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force. This award is given by SERNW to recognize prolonged efforts to preserve, protect, restore, or enhance environments necessary for healthy ecosystems.  Ann has grown the Task Force program through budget, volunteer, and staff growth over her tenure at the Force. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2010, Ann plans to lead the Task Force as it embarks on another 10 years of expansion and dedication toward salmon recovery in the Stillaguamish and Snohomish basins, and Island County watersheds, through community involvement in habitat restoration and watershed education.
