SER 2011 World Conference on Ecological Restoration
The Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) will hold its 4th World Conference on Ecological Restoration, "Re-establishing the Link between Nature and Culture," in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico from August 21-25, 2011. SER2011 will bring together experts from around the world to demonstrate how ecological restoration, when conducted using sound scientific methods and a holistic ecosystem approach, can serve as a tool to re-establish the connections between nature and culture and foster global stability by integrating the social, economic and ecological dimensions of human existence.
Delegates will include practitioners, researchers, planners/managers, students and volunteers with backgrounds in earth sciences, landscape architecture, ecological engineering, natural resource management, public policy, economics, indigenous cultures and community-based activities.

Conferences (in chronological order)
High Intensity Soil Mapping, Site Evaluator Soil Pit Classification, and Wetland Delineation combined workshop
There is something for everyone in this workshop! Soil Mapping Section – Soil scientists will be completing a Class L to Class B High Intensity Soil Survey, using excavator dug soil pits with accompanying NRCS pedon descriptions, a base map with 2 foot topo, color orthophoto, and their own soil auger test holes as needed. Wetland Delineation Section – Soil and wetland scientists will examine and accurately delineate 3 challenging wetlands using measurements along tapes in a riverine wetland, a area of forested pit and mound microtopography, and a forested, logging disturbed wetland. Site Evaluator Section – Site evaluators will have the opportunity to describe a number of soil pits in differing parent materials and drainage classes using the newly adopted “Key for determining Depth to the Seasonal Groundwater Table” and the Munsell Soil Color chart. Code Enforcement Officer Section – Several portions of this workshop are particularly relevant to CEO permitting issues in both small rural towns and larger cities in Maine. After focusing on one or multiple sections, we will convene in the afternoon to discuss the findings with regulatory staff from MDEP, LURC, and USACE.
