July 2007 Conference Calendar New England Region
Here are the latest conferences or workshops in the greater New England area. Enjoy!
Conferences (in chronological order)
SER-NE SPONSORS: Native Phragmites Workshop
A recent survey of the wetlands of Falmouth, MA has showed there are a number of populations of native Phragmites australis growing in two areas of the town. Since there are few documented native Phragmites populations in Massachusetts, we have offered to run a workshop on recognizing the native haplotype with the hope that participants will look for it on other Massachusetts locales. A series of talks in the morning will be followed by exploration of the native populations in the Great Sippewissett Marsh in West Falmouth. See attached registration form! Registration is Limited!
Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2007

10th Annual Wetlands and Watersheds Workshop
This workshop will increase dialogue and foster partnerships among federal, state, and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, public/private partnerships, the scientific community, private industry, and all other stakeholders involved in the management of aquatic resources. This year’s workshop will emphasize managing aquatic systems through the watershed approach. This meeting gives every one with an interest in watersheds & wetlands a great opportunity to hear knowledgeable speakers and interact with others who have similar responsibilities and duties. This year enjoy a “green theme” approach to aquatic resource management exploring green infrastructure techniques within a watershed context.

Phragmites Workshop
This two-day workshop is intended to discuss the latest findings on spread, impacts, genetics and control methods (mechanical, chemical and biological). A particular emphasis will be placed on differences between native and introduced genotypes and the need to protect endemic genotypes. A second emphasis will be discussion of the ongoing research to develop biological control. Several insects have been selected and are currently being tested for their host specificity. We will review the current status and potential implications for the protection of endemic genotypes.
