August 2007 Conference Calendar New England Region

Two SER-New England sponsored events touch off this month’s Conference Calendar! We hope to see some of you folks there! Enjoy!

SER-NE – Sponsored Events

Native Phragmites Workshop

A recent survey of the wetlands of Falmouth, MA has showed there are a number of populations of native Phragmites australis growing in two areas of the town. Since there are few documented native Phragmites populations in Massachusetts, we have offered to run a workshop on recognizing the native haplotype with the hope that participants will look for it on other Massachusetts locales. A series of talks in the morning will be followed by exploration of the native populations in the Great Sippewissett Marsh in West Falmouth. Registration is Limited!

Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Location: Woods Hole Research Center, Woods Hole, MA

Sponsors: The 300 Committee, SER-NE

Field Trip on scenic Martha's Vineyard island, Massachusetts

Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program restoration ecologist Tim Simmons has organized a field trip to Martha’s Vineyard, with the collaboration of The Trustees of Reservations, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation and Polly Hill Arboretum. TTOR has been restoring scrub oak, oak savanna and heathland habitats at Long Point Wildlife Refuge for 20 years and plant and animal populations are showing a terrific response. TTOR’s Regional Ecologist, Greg Whitmore, will guide us through Long Point and Menemsha Hills where restoration for broom crowberry habitat has begun more recently. Long renowned for the development and conservation of many horticultural varieties, Polly Hill Arboretum is currently under the direction of Tim Boland. Tim will display the various efforts they are making on behalf of native flora including the development of an on-Island herbarium and on-line flora in addition to habitat management including invasive species education and control. Stops at other restoration sites will take place as time allows. Registration required so we can arrange the on-island transportation. Registration limited.

Date: October 13 2007

Location: Meet at Woods Hole Ferry Dock, to Vineyard Haven

Phragmites Workshop

This two-day workshop is intended to discuss the latest findings on spread, impacts, genetics and control methods (mechanical, chemical and biological). A particular emphasis will be placed on differences between native and introduced genotypes and the need to protect endemic genotypes. A second emphasis will be discussion of the ongoing research to develop biological control. Several insects have been selected and are currently being tested for their host specificity. We will review the current status and potential implications for the protection of endemic genotypes.
