Unique Training Event for Big Thompson River Restoration

Loveland, CO:

Anyone driving the Big Thompson River Canyon can summarize their feelings in one simple phrase: there is a lot of restoration work to be done. According to John Giordanengo, the Northern Colorado Regional Director for Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, “It is estimated that it will take at least three years to get the primary restoration work done, with several more years of revegetation, weed work, and maintenance of river restoration structures.” What residents may not know is that some of the most important restoration work will not happen without volunteer involvement. And to engage the thousands of volunteers needed over the coming years, it is essential that Crew Leaders are on the ground to lead them.

Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) is one of many local non-profits taking that work on. For 15 years, WRV has been engaging thousands of volunteers to restore ecologically impaired areas, utilizing a system of training volunteer leaders to oversee other volunteers. Never has this work been more critical than right now.

On April 19th, WRV will lead an all-day training event to train future crew leaders for this season’s projects on the Big Thompson. One of the biggest frustrations that landowners have expressed in dealing with the aftermath of the flood is not knowing what to do or where to start. This hands-on training will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to lead a team of volunteers and make a difference.

For the first time ever, WRV is combining flood and fire crew leader training into one comprehensive training event. Participants will learn situational leadership skills, proper tool usage, crew management skills, and hands-on practice with erosion control, seeding, and mulching. The training will be held along the Big Thompson River in Loveland. Participants are asked to commit to two one-day projects per year. Anyone interested in this unique opportunity can contact the WRV office at (970) 493-2075 or register on-line at www.wlrv.org. Once you are registered for the training, additional training details will be provided.

WHEN: Saturday, April 19 from 7:30 AM to 5 PM.

WHERE: Once you register, additional details will be provided.
