SER & Island Press Ecological Restoration Book Series: The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration
James Aronson, Series Editor
Donald A. Falk, Associate Editor

About the Series

SER is pleased with its collaboration with Island Press that has produced a book series providing a foundation of practical knowledge and scientific insight to help ecological restoration become the powerful reparative and healing tool that the world needs. Highlighting important advances in the natural, physical, and social sciences, the series offers both individually authored titles and well-edited collections of papers, and will address terrestrial, insular, and aquatic ecosystems at all levels.

About the Series Editors

James Aronson, Series Editor, is head of the Restoration Ecology Group in the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (CEFE, CNRS), in Montpellier, France, and Curator of Restoration Ecology at the Missouri Botanical Garden, USA. He has worked in projects and programs related to the restoration and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems for over 20 years, in many parts of the world. He has served on the editorial board of Restoration Ecology since 1993. He has published more than 100 scientific articles and co-authored or co-edited six books, and a number of widely cited papers in restoration ecology. With Jelte Van Andel, he co-edited Restoration Ecology: The New Frontier (Blackwell Science; 2OO6). With South African ecologist Sue Milton and economist James Blignaut, he co-edited Restoring Natural Capital; Science, Business, Practice, and with Andre Clewell, he co-authored Ecological Restoration: Principles, Values, and Structure of an Emerging Profession. Both of these volumes appeared in our Series in 2007. Together with Don Falk and Barbara Dean (Executive Editor, Island Press), Aronson strives to make the Series a truly international forum and learning place for practitioners, decision-makers, researchers, teachers and students.

Don Falk, Associate Editor, is Adjunct Associate Professor of dendrochronology in the University of Arizona Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. His research focuses on fire history, fire ecology, dendroecology, and restoration ecology, including multi-scale studies of fire as an ecological and physical phenomenon. His publications include numerous journal articles and three books on conservation genetics and restoration of endangered species, including Foundations of Restoration Ecology, published in 2006 by Island Press. Before coming to the University of Arizona, Don was co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Plant Conservation, originally at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and now at the Missouri Botanical Garden. He served subsequently as first Executive Director of the Society for Ecological Restoration.

Don was appointed to the Arizona Forest Health Advisory Council by Governor Janet Napolitano. He is a AAAS Fellow, and has received research support and fellowships from the National Science Foundation, Joint Fire Science Program, and the Collaborative Forest Restoration Program, and has been honored for his work by the Pinchot Institute, Australian Fulbright Foundation, McGinnies Scholarship in Arid Lands Studies, and the International Association of Landscape Ecology, among others. In 2003 he received the Edward S. Deevey Award from the Ecological Society of America for outstanding graduate work in paleoecology.
