Highlights from 2011
From activites in Mexico to Montreal to Nigeria, from new staff to new board, and from new chapters in Nepal to new chapters in North America, SER has seen more excitement surrounding ecological restoration this year than we've ever seen before! As our members and partners continue to turn to us as a source of knowledge and as a way to connect with others in the field, we work hard to push ecological restoration forward as a viable solution to biodiveristy loss and degradation. Accomplishments of this past year include:
· Brought in over 1,000 delegates from 60 countries to the SER2011 World Conference in Merida, Mexico to explore sociocultural and economic aspects of ecological restoration which culminated in a crucial Call to Action
· Continued program design for a practitioner's certification program
· Co-hosted two side events at the Convention for Biology Diversity (CBD) meeting in Montreal, Canada and released a brochure on the economic rationale for environmental restoration
· Developed a Code of Ethics for the Society
· Established new chapters in Nepal and in the Great Basin U.S. to advance SER's mission on a local level
· Partnered with the Ramsar Scientific and Techinical Review Panel to help guide their work on wetland restoration and draft a multi-convention work proposal on ecosystem restoration
· Added six new titles to the SER-Island book series on ecological restoration
2012 will bring many exciting challenges. We will develop a new website, giving members access to robust sets of tools and resources including an online member directory, news stories, and online publications. We will work with members in South Africa, the Southwest U.S. and Latin America to establish regional chapters. Planning will begin for the Society’s 25th anniversary and 5th World Conference in Madison, Wisconsin in October 2012. We will continue to inform and help guide partners as they address urgent global biodiversity and climate issues.
But we can't do it alone. We rely on contributions and memberships to maintain our efforts to provide valuable tools and resources to our worldwide membership. Your support is crucial and a year-end gift can make a world of difference to our programming. Help us restore the earth - click here to make a tax deductible donation to SER!
