POSITION DESCRIPTION: Eight-month natural resources position perfect for recent biology/ecology graduates seeking hands-on field restoration experience to help direct career and/or graduate school path.
Assist in the management of two of the Garden’s natural areas: a 15-acre created prairie (exhibits six different types of prairie found in northeastern Illinois) and a mile-long urban river reach with an adjoining 22 acres of developing wetlands/prairie and woody vegetation. Typical work responsibilities include removal of weedy/invasive plants (including herbicide application)/planting/seed collection and cleaning/mowing and debris removal/path maintenance and other related activities. Considerable native flora learning involved. Duties include supervision of volunteers. Vegetative monitoring/data entry/literature research/and miscellaneous office work also required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree and/or experience in botany/horticulture/restoration ecology/or equivalent. Knowledge of local flora preferred but not required. Some work experience desired but not required. A strong work ethic/good people skills/and an ability to carry our assignments with little supervision are required. Individuals must be able to work alone for long hours in the out-of-doors performing repetitive/arduous tasks under inclement conditions (heat/rain/mosquitoes/poison ivy).
Ability to take and pass the State of Illinois’ General Standards Pesticide License Test and carry and lift 40 pounds. Experience with Microsoft Office Excel and Word programs desirable. A valid driver’s license is necessary with a good driving record.
